This concert promises to be a magical lead up to Christmas with the compelling and spiritual piece, 'Sunrise Mass', by composer Ola Gjeilo who wrote this work in 2007 and was first performed in 2008 in Oslo, Norway. Ralph Vaughan Williams joyful and well-loved 'Fantasia on Christmas Carols' was written for the Three Choirs Festival in 1912 for Hereford Cathedral. Vaughan Williams had a passion for Christmas that was nourished at an early age by his love of Christmas carols. Fantasia starts with the moving traditional English carol, 'The truth sent from above' performed by the baritone soloist accompanied by strings and piano.
The choir will be conducted by their musical director, Jonathan Kingston, and accompanied by the Banbury Choral Society String Ensemble, organist Charles Matthews and pianist Julian Harris. By popular demand, they will be joined by baritone, Jack Holton, who will also perform a selection of carols.
The wonderful acoustics of St Mary's Church, Banbury will only help to convey the mesmerising and joyful sounds performed by the singers and musicians. The audience will be invited to join in with well-known carols that will help to prepare the way for the Christmas festivities.
