Tickets are now available for our Summer concert on Saturday 13th July 2019.
A warm welcome to all our new members joining this term. We hope you enjoy singing with us and are here to help if you need support.
The choir started the year back, not by rehearsing, but by getting together to catch up on the more important things in life - like socialising!
We're back after our Summer break on Monday 3rd September, starting rehearsals for our Winter Concert taking place at St Mary's Church Banbury on Saturday 1st December.
We welcome new members with open arms, so if you've ever thought about singing in a choir then we'd love you to join us at 7pm on 3rd September at Marlborough Road Methodist Church, Banbury.
New Term Dates have been posted on to the Choir page under the button 'Term Dates'. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday 3rd September for the start of the Autumn Term.
This Monday, 18th June, it's our "9:31 Club" - a chance to relax over a drink and get to know our fellow choir members. We're a friendly bunch, so every third Monday of the month, we gather at the Pinto Lounge straight after rehearsal.
On Saturday 7th July 2018, Banbury Choral Society looks forward to performing an evening of light and popular choral pieces for all to enjoy. Under the baton of their Conductor, Julian Harris, they will be singing Poulenc Gloria, Brahms Liebeslieder Walzer and Faure Cantique de Jean Racine. This Summer Concert takes place at St Mary’s Church, Banbury commencing at 7.30pm. Once again, the choir will be accompanied by the highly accomplished organist, Charles Matthews and pianist, Joe Cummings. A high point of the evening will be Charles and Joe joining together on the piano to perform The Mother Goose Suite by Ravel.
Acclaimed soprano soloist, Katherine Crompton will accompany the choir. Katherine adores the choral repertoire and has appeared as a soloist at many venues throughout the UK including Royal Festival Hall, St Paul's Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral and Canterbury Cathedral singing repertoire from Bach's Passion to Will Todd's Jazz Mass. A passionate recitalist, Katherine has sung at the Oxford Lieder Festival, Wigmore Hall and has sung Strauss's Four Last Songs many times, including most recently with the Oxford Sinfonia. As a keen performer of contemporary music, she recently worked with Harrison Birtwistle, performing his Niedecker Songs alongside Cellist Adrian Brendel while last year she sang in the world première of David Blake's Opera, Icarus, directed by Keith Warner.
Francis Poulenc wrote his sacred choral work Gloria in 1959, four years before his death. Gloria is a firm favourite with performers and audiences around the world. Poulenc uses a wide contrast in pace and a colourful palette of musical interpretation to express different emotions. Gloria reflects Poulenc’s sense of humour and love of life by delivering a vitality and excitement throughout the mass which is divided up into six short movements.
Johannes Brahms Liebesliedger Walzer was first performed in 1870 and is made up of a collection of love poems written in a popular style that do not lose Brahms usual compositional complexity. It was written for choir and piano accompaniment and is frequently performed by choirs.
Gabriel Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine, is taken from text written by Jean Racine who published his work in 1688. Faure named his piece after him and composed the music at the age of 19 as part of a music contest in which he received first prize. This piece is very often performed with his other well-known work Requiem.
The choir continues to flourish under the guidance of Julian Harris. Very recently two new young members passed their audition for the Youth Outreach Scheme and will be singing with the choir under Julian’s tutelage. The Scheme was set up in 2012 to help young people to build confidence in singing with a large choir and improve their vocal technique. All students, and people up to the age of 25, receive free membership to the choir.
At Christmas, on Saturday 1st December in St Mary’s Church Banbury, the choir will perform Bach Magnificat in D, Charpentier Te Deum and Messe de Minuit pour Noel.
